Abstract

Sonority sequence constraint is a markedness constraint. This constraint will guarantee that the compound onset has an increase in sonority and the compound coda a decrease. Among the strategies that Kalhori Kurdish employs to stop the sonority constraint in the consonant clusters is to use the vowel anaptyxis and metathesis. In the first one Kalhori uses front half open vowel /e/. Adding this vowel violates the DEP constraint but it will be shown that violating it to the benefit of a higher rank constraint is justified. It will also be shown that metathesis violates linearity but since speakers sometimes apply a higher position to the sonority sequence constraint in the dialect under the study, violating it to the benefit of a constraint with a higher rank is not considered as a fatal violation.
