phonological markedness and ellipsis: the place of articulation of consonants
Document Type : Research Paper
Abstract
This research deals with featural markedness of place of articulation of consonants in Persian. Because of the determining function of uncongenial relations, markedness studies hierarchy in phonological systems. This research, among the proposed criteria by Rice (2000), applies only Ellipsis criteria for determining the existing hierarchical markedness in consonantal relations. It is showed that glottals and coronals constitute the most unmarked consonants for place of articulation. Labials and dorsals are the marked consonants. Then, it is argued that markedness is not an absolute phenomenon in languages.
