Abstract
One of the most important methods for understanding and expressing the concept of “life” in many languages and cultures is metaphor. Identifying the metaphors that an individual or a society uses to conceptualize life reveals the worldview and perspective of that person or society regarding the category of life. The present study investigates how life is metaphorically conceptualized in the worldview of Hafez and Fereydoon Moshiri. The data consist of metaphorical expressions extracted from all of Hafez’s ghazals and the poems published by Moshiri in the two collections “From Silence” and “The Sin of the Sea,” and they are analyzed within the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980; Kövecses, 2010) and the Charteris-Black approach (2004). The results show that two conceptual keys, “life as a journey” and “life as a place,” play a prominent role in conceptualizing life in the poetry of both poets,
