Abstract
This study investigates the semantic network of the French noun tête (“head”) using the cognitive linguistics polysemy approach. Based on data extracted from the frTenTen web corpus, five main meaning categories were identified: (1) the literal/prototypical sense of the body part, (2) the upper part of objects (vertical orientation), (3) the front/leading part of entities (horizontal orientation), (4) mental and cognitive functions, and (5) emotional/psychological states. The study illustrates how these senses form a radial category centered around a prototypical meaning, extending through metaphorical and metonymic processes. Findings show the semantic extensions of tête are structured and motivated by embodied experience and conceptual mappings, reflecting broader cognitive and cultural models. A brief comparison is made with the polysemy of the Persian equivalent sar. The analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of lexical organization and cognitive motivations in semantic structures, useful for linguists and language educators in French and Persian contexts.
