Abstract

Language is used as a tool to understand power inequalities between different social classes, revealing the structures of dominance in an unhealthy society. In this context, the hidden meanings of ideology and power within social constructs are always present, waiting to be recognized. This recognition, aided by discourse analysis, helps us comprehend the concealed meanings in texts and speech. One significant social construct that reflects inequality is economic corruption, which is closely intertwined with the concept of politics. Identifying the dimensions and methods of combating economic corruption can help clarify social discourse about it and block potential pathways for its emergence. In this study, we examine oil-related economic corruption in Iran using the approaches of legitimization, adjacent structuring, and critical metaphor analysis in the courtroom discourse of oil corruption defendants to represent the status and discourse of the actors involved in economic corruption.
