Abstract

Zand texts are translation of Avestan texts in Middle Persian language. Following the typological model of Mauri and Van der Auwera (2012), this study aims to identify, describe and provide the historical source of the inter-clausal connectives in Zand of Hormazd Yasht. In languages of the World different strategies are used to connect two or more clauses. This can often be achieved by using connectives or through pragmatic inferencing without any overt connective (asyndetic coordination). Our study reveals that in Zand of Hormazd Yasht, question and time words have greatest share in providing the historical source of connectives. Furthermore, as far as conjunctive connectives are concerned, asyndetic strategy is more used than inserting overt connectives. This is also true for conditional relations where pragmatic inferencing assume the burden of indicating meaning relations between two clauses.
