Morphological borrowing of Uyghur language from Persian

Abstract

The present article examines the possibility of borrowing the Persian morphological system from the Uyghur language. For this purpose, ten Persian derivational affixes were selected and the words derived from them in the Uyghur language were extracted. Using the criteria of Gardani (2018) in distinguishing simple borrowing from lexical borrowing, the extracted words were classified into four categories. The first and second categories include words that exist in both languages and are therefore the result of mere lexical borrowing. The third category includes words that, although their bases are Persian, but the derived word is not in Persian lexicon. The words of the fourth category have non-Persian bases. According to the criteria used, words belonging to the third and fourth groups confirm morphological borrowing. According to the data analysis, it can be claimed that in the Uyghur language, morphological borrowing has occurred in all the studied words.
