Abstract

Translation of neologisms which are newly coined lexical units or existing lexical units, is one of the most significant problems for the translators of scientific texts. The novelty nature of neologisms gets translators into trouble finding proper equivalence. The present study tries to provide a suitable guide by identifying the most used and common types of neologism and the most common process used to translate these words from English to Persian, in order to provide appropriate strategic suggestions in the translation of neologisms and suitable guidance for translators in the field of translation them in medical texts. Another goal of the researchers is to investigate the ability of Persian translators’ processes in those cases in which there are not any equivalents for them in Persian to preserve the novelty of these words in translation. In order to achieve the goals of this study, a parallel corpus of medical texts, including three books published between 2010 and 2020, was used. The examples of neologisms in this corpus were identified and compared with their Persian equivalents. The results of this study showed that official neologisms are the most common type in medical texts, and transfer is the most common process. Also, the novelty of neologisms was preserved in the translation of texts. The final results help to specify the norms of translation in the given decade as well as the translators' method in translating neologisms.
