Abstract

As one of the ancient style in lexicography, the Nesab or verse dictionary is generally referred to monolingual or bilingual glossories, whose composer intended to teach words or grammatical points to facilitate vocabulary learning by using the harmonies of those poems. Among such old versified dictionaries, we can mention the Nesab al-Sebyan of Abu Nasr Farahi (7th century AH), which became a model for the writing of Nesabs in the following centuries in different languages. In our country, along with increasing interactions with other countries, verse dictionaries have been compiled and adjusted with the aim of simpliflying the process of language learning in recent centuries. The present article aims to review the process of compiling versified glossories from the beginning to the present century, introduce the most prominent ones with emphasis on the structural characteristics of each one, and present an example of the text of thes Nesabs.
