Abstract

Due to the fact that understanding "generic noun" in languages has always been a difficult problem, investigating this grammatical category precisely and comprehensively has been neglected. In this brief paper, I have first examined and explained types of generic nouns in terms of meaning. In addition, I illustrated that the category of generic noun is not one of the types of the "indefinite" category; in other words, the grammatical elements of indefiniteness do not have the ability to encode the generic noun and this grammatical concept, as a separate grammatical category, is encoded only by using the plural marker and unmarkedness. In this regard, it has been explained by presenting arguments that the two concepts of "non-specific" and "generic" are totally different concepts despite the similarity in appearance. In this research, generic pronouns are also introduced, which are the result of grammaticalization process.
