Polysemy of perception verb “to see” [didan] in Persian: A cognitive and corpus-based study

Abstract

The present paper is a corpus- based cognitive semantic account of polysemy of the verb “to see” in Persian Language. Polysemy is a condition in which a word has multiple related meanings. One of the important domains of polysemy is the study of perception verbs. Perception verbs, such as “to see”, “to hear”, “to touch”, “to smell” and “to taste”, are related to function of five senses. The present study is a corpus- based analysis of polysemy of the verb “to see” based on Antonano`s (1999, 2013) and Sweetser`s (1990) models. Since lexical entries of the verb “to see” are not similar in various dictionaries, we decided to perform a corpus- based study on the meanings of this verb and to draw the semantic network. This semantic network can be used in lexicography and teaching Persian Language to Non- Persians.
